Basics
Hole cards: The cards that a player is dealt
Pocket pair: Paired hole cards
Flop: The first 3 cards on the board
Turn: The 4th card on the board
River: The 5th card on the board
Preflop: The betting round that takes place before the flop is dealt
postflop: any action after the flop is dealt
Dealer button: That little button that indicates which player is
currently the dealer
Position
UTG or Under the gun: The first person to act preflop, seated just
after the big blind
EP or early position: depending on how many players there is at the table, it
can be only the player UTG and up to UTG and the 2 next players
MP or Middle position: a few players after early position
LP or late position: At a table with 3 or more players, the dealer button is
always considered late position, if there are more players, then 1 or 2 players
before him are also considered late position
CO or cut-off: The position of the player that act just before the dealer
button
Having position over X: acting after X on any betting round postflop
General
Out: An out is a card that would make your hand a winner (ex: if you
have 9T, your opponent has AA and flop is 782, any of the four 6 or J are all
outs since they give you a straight and would make your hand the winner)
Tilt: Playing bad after a bad beat
Bad Beat: A series of hands where your opponents gets lucky often and beat your strong hands
Draw: A hand that is missing somthing to get a straight or a
flush. Must be on the flop or on the turn, you can't have a draw on the
river since there are no more cards coming (ex: you have 78 and flop is 6TA,
that gives you a straight draw)
Open ended straight draw or double gutshot straight draw or inside straight
draw or flush draw: see DRAW_LINK
Slowplay: Having a strong hand but waiting for future betting round to
bet in an attempt to get more money into the pot (ex: your opponent raised
preflop, you called with 22 and flop comes 2AJ, you decide to only check and
hope that your opponent will bet the flop and the turn in order to reraise him
on the turn)
SH or Shorthanded: When there is 6 or less players at the table
FR or Full Ring: Players usually refer as full ring a table with 9 or
10 players
HU or heads up: Only 2 players (it's a general term, a head up table
would be a table that only allow 2 players to sit, heads up on the flop would
mean that everyone folded before the flop except 2 players)
Fish: A weak player, easy to beat
Shark: A strong player
Boat: A full house
The nuts: The best possible hand on the current board (ex: if the
board is 566AK, someone having 66 in his hands (4 of a kind) would have the nuts)
Set: When you have a pocket pair and get 3 of a kind (ex: you have 33
and flop comes 39K)
Tripps: When you don't have a pocket pair but get 3 of kind (ex: you
have 56 and flop comes 66K), it must be a pair on the board that matches one of
your hole card (56 flop KKK isin't tripps)
str8: straight
SNG or sit n go: A small tournament, usually with 10 players, but it
can be more or less. Sit n go are not scheduled tournament, there are
available all day and starts as soon as there are enough players
