Shorthanded no limit and pot limit preflop
Like on any of my preflop charts, you will not find anything about playing on
the dealer button. Playing many hands on the dealer button is even more
important in shorthanded no limit holdem than in full ring or limit holdem.
Preflop, the basic idea is to play tight in every position except the CO and the
dealer button.
When you are getting comfortable with the game, learn to adapt and do not
follow this chart like by the letter. Making money online is about playing
many hands against the weak players, so loosen up a bit against weak opponents
and maybe tighten up even more against strong opponents. There is nothing
wrong about calling a raise with AT against a fish and folding AQ against a
raise from a strong player.
If you don't know the names of the different positions, you a look at the poker
terms. Now, let's start with that chart! You will see the hands
that you should play for every position:
Under The Gun (first to act preflop)
Raise with 77-AA, AK-AT, KQ. If the table is easy to beat, you can add
KJs, A9s and A8s, maybe even KTs and QJs if the opposition is really weak.
Do not call with anything, you never, EVER want to open limp. I am
really serious, just NEVER do that!
Middle position
If the table has 5 players or less, forget about this one, after UTG, it's CO.
Raise with 77-AA, AK-AT, KQ, KJs, A9s-A8s. If your opponents are weak,
you can add KTs, QTs and maybe even KTo, K9s and Q9s.
If UTG has called, you can call with hands like 66-55, 89s, 9Ts, JTs, KJ, KT,
QT, A7s.
CO (act just before the dealer button)
Raise with 77-AA, AK-AT, A9s-A5s, KQs-KTs, QJs, QTs, JTs
If there is 1 or more limper, call with any pair, any Ace suited or any
suited connectors starting at 56s
Small blind
If there is a raise, you have to play extremely tight since you will be out
of position against a strong hand. It's hard to make money in this spot in
the long run even with AK.
If there is no raise, you can call many hands if there is 2 or more limpers.
If everyone folded, you are about to enter in a battle of the blind, this
requires a lot of experience. My advice to you is, if you are still
uncomfortable, play tight, but if you feel like you can play a better postflop
game than the big blind, attack him often.
Big Blind
If there is a raise, remeber that if you call, you will play against a strong
hand from out of position, so do it only with strong hands. Defending your
blinds against late position stealers is for experienced players only! But
know that one day, you will have to learn to reraise those stealers when you
have a valid hand (the hands you will reraise with depends on the range of hands
your opponent steals with).
